Wednesday, March 1, 1961: The Beatles perform at Aintree Institute, Aintree, Liverpool.

Thursday, March 1, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club at lunchtime. That night they give a performance at the Storyville Jazz Club on Temple Street in Liverpool.

Friday, March 1, 1963: The Beatles, on the Helen Shapiro tour, perform at the Odeon Cinema, Southport, Lancashire.

Sunday, March 1, 1964: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). They record three songs in three hours. "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You", a song John Lennon had written for George Harrison to sing, is completed in four takes. "Long Tall Sally" is recorded in a single, terrific take, and "I Call Your Name" is completed in seven takes. [Note: "Long Tall Sally" and "I Call Your Name" were released in the US on the LP "The Beatles' Second Album"; in the UK they were released on the "Long Tall Sally" EP. "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" was included on the "A Hard Day's Night" LP in both countries, although the US and UK albums were quite different.]

Monday, March 1, 1965: Beatles filming their second movie, "HELP!", in the Bahamas: filming at "Cafe' Martinique" restaurant and Ringo on a schooner with Victor Spinetti (Prof. Foot), Roy Kinnear (Algernon), and Eleanor Bron (Ahme).

Tuesday, March 1, 1966: A documentary film of The Beatles' Shea Stadium concert of August 15, 1965, is broadcast in the UK by the BBC.

Wednesday, March 1, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). A new piano track is taped for the already-mastered "A Day in the Life", but this new overdub is later discarded. Recording then begins for "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Seven takes are recorded.

Thursday, March 2, 1961: The Beatles perform at Litherland Town Hall.

Friday, March 2, 1962: The Beatles perform at two different venues. First they play a show at St. John's Hall in Bootle, then they cross the Mersey River for a performance at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton, Wallasey. The support group for the Bootle appearance is The Searchers (The Beatles are paid 17 pounds, the Searchers are paid 6 pounds, and paid attendance was 357). The Tower event was billed as a "Mad March Rock Ball".

Saturday, March 2, 1963: The Beatles, on the Helen Shapiro tour, perform at City Hall, Sheffield, Yorkshire, playing for two "houses". After the second show, they drive 38 miles to Manchester, to appear on a live interview program (see separate entry).

Saturday, March 2, 1963: After performing in Sheffield, The Beatles drive to Manchester's Didsbury Studio Centre to appear live on the ABC Television news-magazine program "ABC At Large", which is broadcast to the Midlands and the north regions. Along with Brian Epstein, The Beatles give a lengthy interview with host David Hamilton. Although The Beatles do not perform on the show, a brief clip of them doing a lip-sync performance of "Please Please Me", from their February 23 appearance on "Thank Your Lucky Stars", is replayed.

Monday, March 2, 1964: US release of Beatles single "Twist and Shout/There's A Place" (Tollie). 11 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #2.

Monday, March 2, 1964: Filming begins for The Beatles' first movie, "A Hard Day's Night", although the film has no title at this point. The Beatles have to join the actor's union minutes before getting on the train at Paddington Station so that filming can begin. The first week's filming is scheduled to take place on a train. On this first day, the train travels west to Minehead and then returns to London. Because of the Beatlemania surrounding their first day's departure, The Beatles decide to board the train on the following days at the more discreet Acton Main Line and having their chauffeurs meet them at out-of-the-way drop-off points in the evenings. Schoolgirl actress Pattie Boyd, whose train sequence with The Beatles is filmed this day, meets George Harrison. They would marry on January 21, 1966.

Tuesday, March 2, 1965: The Beatles in the Bahamas, filming their second movie, originally titled "Eight Arms to Hold You", but eventually renamed "HELP!"

Thursday, March 2, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Overdubs are recorded for "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", including vari-speed vocals and instrument recordings. By the end of the session, the song is essentially completed, although additional mixing will be done. Saturday, March 3, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club - a night show.

Sunday, March 3, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Gaumont Cinema, Hanley, Staffordshire, on the final night of the Helen Shapiro tour. Having started the tour as the opening act at the bottom of the bill, The Beatles have worked their way up to closing the first-half of each show.

Tuesday, March 3, 1964: Filming for The Beatles' first movie, "A Hard Day's Night", aboard a train headed to Minehead and back.

Wednesday, March 3, 1965: The Beatles continue the filming of "HELP!" in the Bahamas; this day the film's final sequence is shot (Ringo staked out on the beach, painted red; the ring flies off of his hand).

Friday, March 3, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Working on the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Four french horn players (James Buck, Neil Sanders, Tony Randall, and John Burden) are brought into the studio to record overdubs. John Lennon, as he had done with musicians brought in to play on "Penny Lane", secretly records the musicians' conversation for his personal tape archive (which he was compiling for use in his experimental works). Wednesday, March 4, 1964: More train filming for "A Hard Day's Night" (as yet untitled). Another day's travel to Minehead and back. They stop at the station in Crowcombe, Somerset, to shoot a favorite scene in the film: The Beatles running, outside of the train (they were running on the station platform beside the slowly-moving train), shouting mischievously at the stuffy 'regular passenger' (actor Richard Vernon), "Hey mister! Can we have our ball back?"

Thursday, March 4, 1965: The Beatles continue filming for their second movie, "HELP!", in the Bahamas.

Friday, March 4, 1966: UK release of Beatles EP "Yesterday" (Parlophone). Songs: "Yesterday", "Act Naturally", "You Like Me Too Much", and "It's Only Love". Highest chart position: #1.

Friday, March 4, 1994: US re-release of Beatles US single "I Want to Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There" (Capitol). 30th anniversary reissue.

Monday, March 4, 1996: Release of Beatles single "Real Love/Baby's in Black/Yellow Submarine/Here There and Everywhere" in the US (Capitol) and the UK (Parlophone/Apple). Sunday, March 5, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Casbah Coffee Club, West Derby, Liverpool.

Monday, March 5, 1962: The Beatles perform a lunchtime show at the Cavern Club. That night, they perform at the Kingsway Club in Southport.

Tuesday, March 5, 1963: The Beatles in the recording studio: Studio Two, EMI Studios, London. Only five days after John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song "From Me to You", The Beatles are recording it for their third single. Originally slotted for the B-side of the record, it is switched to the A-side during the recording session, with "Thank You Girl" demoted to the flip side. They record 13 takes of "From Me to You" and 13 takes of "Thank You Girl" (at that time titled "Thank You Little Girl"). The Beatles also want to record "The One After 909" and "What Goes On", but only have time to record a few takes of "909". Five takes are recorded, but none turns out quite right, so the song is shelved and the tracks remained unissued until "Anthology I" (the song was re-recorded in 1969 during the rooftop concert on January 30, that version appearing on the "Let It Be" album and in the movie). The "From Me to You/Thank You Girl" single was issued by EMI, on the Parlophone label, on April 11, 1963. "The Beatles Anthology 1" includes a sequence of incomplete takes of "One After 909" and a complete version of the song pieced together from the partial takes (Disc 1, Tracks 25-26).

Tuesday, March 5, 1963: Release in Sweden of Beatles single "Please Please Me/Love Me Do" (Odeon). Three weeks in the Swedish charts; highest position #7.

Thursday, March 5, 1964: Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" continues. More filming aboard a train, this time headed to Taunton and back.

Friday, March 5, 1965: The Beatles filming their second movie, "HELP!", in the Bahamas. Day's shots include John, Paul and George running around the island shouting "RINGO!"

Thursday, March 5, 1970: A promotional film for "Let It Be" is broadcast on UK television, on the program "Top of the Pops".

Thursday, March 5, 1970: Release in Sweden of Beatles single "Let It Be/You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" (Apple). Three weeks in the Swedish charts; highest position #6.

Tuesday, March 6, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club - a night show.

Wednesday, March 6, 1963: The Beatles appear at the Playhouse Theatre in Manchester to record their fifth (and final) appearance on the BBC radio program "Here We Go". They perform "I Saw Her Standing There", "Misery", "Do You Want to Know a Secret", and "Please Please Me". The show is broadcast on March 12, with "I Saw Her Standing There" edited out of the broadcast tape, presumably because of time limitations.

Friday, March 6, 1964: Yet more filming aboard train for "A Hard Day's Night". This day's destination is Newton Abbot.

Saturday, March 6, 1965: In the Bahamas, filming their second movie "Eight Arms to Hold You" (later re-titled "HELP!"), The Beatles shoot scenes at Nassau International Airport, descending steps leading from their airplane to the ground. The Beatles wildly take photos of one another as they make their way down the steps.

Monday, March 6, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Overdubbing sound effects onto the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". The beginning audience murmurs and sounds of a band preparing for a performance are added, as are sounds of audience applause and laughter. Later, when the song is joined with "With a Little Help From My Friends", screams will be added from a tape of the Beatles in concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Friday, March 6, 1970: UK release of Beatles single "Let It Be/You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" (Apple). 6 weeks on the charts; highest position #2.

Saturday, March 6, 1976: UK re-release of Beatles' collected singles "The Singles Collection 1962-1970" (EMI). Includes 23 Beatles UK singles -- the original 22 singles and the about-to-be released "Yesterday/I Should Have Known Better". Singles: "Love Me Do/P.S. Tuesday, March 7, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Cassanova Club, Liverpool.

Wednesday, March 7, 1962: The Beatles record their first radio appearance, at the Playhouse Theatre, Hulme, Manchester, for the BBC radio program "Teenager's Turn - Here We Go". After a rehearsal, the Beatles put on suits for the first time and, along with the other artists appearing on the program, record the show in front of a teenage audience. The Beatles perform three songs, all cover versions: "Dream Baby", "Memphis", and "Please Mr. Postman". Broadcast the following afternoon, March 8.

Thursday, March 7, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Elizabethan Ballroom, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. The Beatles headline a four-act bill of groups managed by Brian Epstein. Supporting The Beatles are Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Big Three, and Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas. Two hired buses transport all of the performers, along with 80 devoted Liverpool fans.

Saturday, March 7, 1964: "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is the #1 single in the US for the 6th straight week.

Saturday, March 7, 1964: The Beatles take the weekend off from filming their first movie ("A Hard Day's Night").

Sunday, March 7, 1965: The Beatles in the Bahamas shooting their second movie "Eight Arms to Hold You" (eventually re-titled "HELP!") The day's filming is for "temple" scenes, the shooting taking place at a wretched hospital for handicapped children and the elderly. The Beatles are disgusted by conditions in the hospital.

Tuesday, March 7, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Additional overdubs are recorded for "Lovely Rita", including harmony vocals, effects, and the percussive sound of a piece of toilet paper being blown through a haircomb. The session begins at 7:00 pm and ends at 2:30 am.

Friday, March 8, 1996: Beatles fans in the UK are outraged when BBC Radio 1 refuses to include the new Beatles single "Real Love" on its playlist. The program, which is trying to attract a young audience, feels that the song is "Ånot what our listeners want to hear." Radio 1 also claims that the song "lacked merit". Fans of the Beatles point out that "Real Love" is currently #4 in the charts, and that "Free As a Bird", which Radio 1 had played, made it to #2 in the charts. Friday, March 9, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club twice - at lunchtime and again at night.

Saturday, March 9, 1963: The Beatles, back on tour, this time with Americans Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform at the Granada Cinema, East Ham, London. It is quite clear, from the first of the two "houses" this night onward, that The Beatles are, in fact, the premiere attraction. The Beatles play "Love Me Do", "Misery", "A Taste of Honey", "Do You Want to Know a Secret", "Please Please Me", and "I Saw Her Standing There".

Monday, March 9, 1964: Filming resumes for The Beatles' first movie, "A Hard Day's Night". This is the last day of filming train scenes. The train travels to Newton Abbot and back. During their six days of filming aboard a moving train, The Beatles travel a total of 2,500 miles on the rails.

Tuesday, March 9, 1965: The Beatles, in their final day of shooting in the Bahamas for their second movie, "HELP!" (initially titled "Eight Arms to Hold You"), are filming on Paradise Island.

Thursday, March 9, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). They start recording "Getting Better", taping seven rhythm track takes and doing reduction mixdowns in preparation for overdubbing.

Saturday, March 9, 1968: The Beatles are awarded four Grammy Awards for 1967: Best Album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"; Best Contemporary Album "Sgt. Saturday, March 10, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Youth Club, St. Paul's Presbyterian Church Hall, Tranmere, Birkenhead. Also appearing is The Country Four with Brian Newman. The Beatles were billed as "Polydor Recording Artists" on the strength of their single with Tony Sheridan, "My Bonnie", which had been released in the UK on January 5, on the Polydor label. Admission price: 5 shillings.

Sunday, March 10, 1963: The Beatles, touring with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform at the Hippodrome Theatre, Birmingham, Warwickshire.

Tuesday, March 10, 1964: Filming continues for the Beatles' first movie ("A Hard Day's Night", still untitled on this date). Shooting of a portion of Ringo's "solo" sequence, at The Turks Head pub on Winchester Rd., St. Margarets, Twickenham. Ringo visits the pub, complains about the sandwiches, breaks a beer bottle, and nearly skewers a parrot perched in the vicinity of the pub's dart board.

Wednesday, March 10, 1965: The Beatles leave the Bahamas and return to England, arriving there on the morning of the March 11.

Friday, March 10, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Saturday, March 11, 1961: The Beatles perform at Aintree Institute, Aintree, Liverpool, and at the Liverpool Jazz Society (LJS). The LJS booking is a 12-group, 12-hour "Big Beat Session"; the capacity is 1,000, but with people coming and going all night, about 2,000 people see at least a part of the show. Some of the other groups on the bill are Kingsize Taylor & the Dominoes, Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Sunday, March 11, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Casbah Coffee Club, West Derby, Liverpool.

Monday, March 11, 1963: With no tour performance this day, The Beatles travel to EMI House in London to appear on their fourth (and final) Radio Luxembourg "The Friday Spectacular". The Beatles are interviewed, and both sides of the "Please Please Me/Ask Me Why" single are played. The radio show is broadcast on March 15.

Wednesday, March 11, 1964: Filming for "A Hard Day's Night". The first day of shooting at Twickenham Film Studios (8 am - 10 pm). Filming on a stage set made to look like a train guard's cage, where the Beatles play cards and lip-sync to "I Should Have Known Better".

Wednesday, March 11, 1964: Release in Sweden of Beatles single "Can't Buy Me Love/You Can't Do That" (Parlophone). Twelve weeks in the Swedish charts; highest position #1.

Saturday, March 11, 1967: The Beatles are awarded Grammy awards for 1966: Song of the Year (Lennon-McCartney for "Michelle"), Best Solo Vocal Performance (Paul McCartney for "Eleanor Rigby"), and Best Album Cover (Klaus Voorman for "Revolver").

Thursday, March 13, 1958: The Quarry Men perform at The Morgue Skiffle Center, Oakhill Park, Broadgreen, Liverpool. This is the opening night of a club run by 18-year-old Alan Caldwell, whose group Alan Caldwell's Texans also performs. Caldwell later adopts the stage name 'Rory Storm', and his group becomes known as 'The Hurricanes'. The club is located in the cellar of a huge old Victorian house that had previously been a home for retired nurses. It held 100 people, and it was lit by a single, blue bulb and a fluorescent strip light. An electric fan provided the club's 'ventilation'. The club is closed by police a month later, but it is likely that the Quarry Men played there on more than one occasion.

Monday, March 13, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club - a lunchtime show. That night they perform at the Liverpool Jazz Society.

Tuesday, March 13, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club - a lunchtime performance.

Wednesday, March 13, 1963: The Beatles, on tour with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform before two "houses" at the Rialto Theatre in York. John Lennon, still voiceless due to a very bad cold, is unable to perform, missing the second night in a row. That morning, however, The Beatles had flown down to London to record a harmonica part for the song "Thank You Girl", so John didn't get much rest.

Wednesday, March 13, 1963: Instead of traveling straight from Bedford to York with the Montez/Roe tour, The Beatles detour to London for a recording session in Studio Two of EMI Studios. They are there to record a harmonica overdub for the song "Thank You Girl", recording 15 takes. Stricken with a bad cold, John Lennon was nonetheless able to play harmonica, but he had no voice; he wasn't able to perform with The Beatles that night.

Friday, March 13, 1964: Filming continues for "A Hard Day's Night". On location at the old Gatwick Airport. In the morning they film the scene at the end of the movie where The Beatles and "Paul's grandfather" (Wilfrid Brambell) take off in a helicopter, with promotional photos falling from the rising craft. After lunch The Beatles are filmed "larking about" on the helicopter launch pad (some of this footage will be used for the exuberant "Can't Buy Me Love" segment).

Friday, March 13, 1964: Sales of the US Capitol LP "Meet the Beatles" reach a record 3.5 million copies. Billboard reports that sales of Beatles singles currently account for 60 percent of the singles market.

Saturday, March 13, 1965: "Eight Days a Week" becomes the #1 single in the US (Billboard).

Saturday, March 13, 1965: The Beatles fly to Obertauern, Austria, for more location shooting for their movie "HELP!"

Monday, March 13, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Six members of Sounds, Inc. are brought into the studio to add the horn parts for "Good Morning Good Morning" (three saxophones, two trombones, and one french horn).

Sunday, March 14, 1965: The Beatles undertake the first day of filming Austrian scenes for their movie "HELP!" Shooting of the (unused) "toboggan hire" sequence, the Beatles falling down together in the snow, and their doubles riding in a horse-drawn sleigh.

Thursday, March 14, 1968: A promotional film for "Lady Madonna" is broadcast in black and white on UK television, on the BBC1 program "Top of the Pops". The video portion of the film clip was shot while The Beatles were performing the song "Hey Bulldog", but the "Lady Madonna" audio track was paired with the video for the promo release. It won't be until 1999 that the video is broadcast with its original "Hey Bulldog" soundtrack.

Friday, March 15, 1963: The Beatles, on the Montez/Roe tour, perform for two "houses" at Colston Hall, Bristol. John Lennon, recovering from his bad cold, is back on stage with The Beatles.

Monday, March 15, 1965: The Beatles filming "HELP!" in Austria: this day and the next spent shooting various scenes cavorting in the snow and on a ski lift.

Wednesday, March 15, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). The first session recording George Harrison's song "Within You Without You". George Harrison is the only Beatle to perform on this song, which is not yet titled and is called simply "Untitled". Take one of the basic track is completed during the session, with George Harrison playing swordmandel and tamboura, Natver Soni playing tabla, Amrat Gajjar playing dilruba, PD Joshi playing swordmandel, and an undocumented musician playing a droning tamboura. Neil Aspinall also contributes a tamboura part.

Friday, March 15, 1968: UK release of Beatles single "Lady Madonna/The Inner Light" (Parlophone). 6 weeks on the charts; highest position #1.

Friday, March 15, 1968: A promotional film for "Lady Madonna" is broadcast in black and white on UK television, on the BBC1 program "All Systems Freeman". Saturday, March 16, 1963: Instead of moving straight from Bristol to Sheffield with the Montez/Roe tour, The Beatles detoured to Broadcasting House in London for a live radio appearance. They had been forced to cancel a March 11 recording date for the BBC radio program "Saturday Club", so they perform six songs that are inserted live into the pre-recorded radio broadcast. The songs: "I Saw Her Standing There", "Misery", "Too Much Monkey Business", "I'm Talking About You", "Please Please Me", and "The Hippy Hippy Shake". After the broadcast, The Beatles have to hurry north 158 miles to Sheffield for the night's scheduled performance.

Saturday, March 16, 1963: The Beatles, on tour with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform for two "houses" at City Hall, Sheffield. That morning and afternoon they'd made another mad dash to London and back to play a live radio performance (see separate entry).

Monday, March 16, 1964: US release of Beatles single "Can't Buy Me Love/You Can't Do That" (Capitol). 10 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1.

Tuesday, March 16, 1965: The Beatles continue filming in Austria for their second movie, "HELP!" Completion of the "ski lift" segment.

Saturday, March 17, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Village Hall in Knotty Ash, Liverpool. The evening was billed as a "St. Patrick's Night Rock Gala". The promoter, Sam Leach, booked The Beatles and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes to draw a big crowd so that he could make enough profits to pay for his engagement party, scheduled to follow the night's show. The Beatles attended Leach's party, which didn't end until the following afternoon.

Sunday, March 17, 1963: The Beatles, touring with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform at the Embassy Cinema in Peterborough.

Tuesday, March 17, 1964: Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" at Les Ambassadeurs (a private club) for the nightclub scene where they find Paul's 'grandfather' (Wilfrid Brambell) gambling at "Le Circle Club". During the day John Lennon gave an interview about his first book, "In His Own Write", which is due to be published on the 23rd.

Wednesday, March 17, 1965: The Beatles continue filming for "HELP!", in Austria. In the curling rink with a bomb hidden in one of the curling stones. Scenes of The Beatles in the bushes. This day a press release announces that the upcoming movie will be titled "Eight Arms to Hold You".

Friday, March 17, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). The "Sgt. Pepper" recording sessions continue. This day the orchestral score for "She's Leaving Home" is recorded. George Martin had been busy with other matters, so Paul had asked freelance producer/arranger Mike Leander to compose the arrangement. Martin was a bit miffed, but he showed good grace nonetheless. One of the ten musicians was harpist Sheila Bromberg, the first woman to play on a Beatles recording.

During a lull in the filming, The Beatles tape an interview segment for the BBC radio program "The Public Ear". Fans had requested that advance notice be given of any appearance by The Beatles on the program, so Ringo tapes a promotional bit asking fans to call all their friends so they could tune in and give a listen. Broadcast on March 22.

Thursday, March 18, 1965: The Beatles in Austria working on "HELP!" (at this point titled "Eight Arms to Hold You"). Filming at an Olympic ski-jump, on a mountainside, and in a ski-resort cellar.

Thursday, March 18, 1965: John Lennon gives friend and ex-Quarry Man Pete Shotton 20,000 pounds to open Hayling Supermarkets. Presumably, John makes the transfer through his solicitor, since he is filming in Austria at the time.

At lunchtime The Beatles rush to the Dorchester Hotel to receive an award, and that evening they tape an appearance for the most famous pop show in the UK "Top of the Pops" (see separate entries). An exhausting day for the much-in-demand Beatles.

Thursday, March 19, 1964: The Beatles attend a luncheon at London's Dorchester Hotel, held by the Variety Club of Great Britain, and receive awards for "Show Business Personalities of 1963". Each Beatle gave a short acceptance speech. The BBC broadcast a 30-minute film of the ceremony on March 20. The ceremony was issued in 1993 in the US on the CD "Beatles Tapes II. Early Beatlemania: 1963-64".

Thursday, March 19, 1964: The Beatles tape a television appearance for the most famous of UK pop programs, "Top of the Pops" ("Top of the Pops" premiered on January 1, 1964). The Beatles lip-sync to "Can't Buy Me Love" and "You Can't Do That" (the songs on their latest single). Recorded at London's Television Theatre. Broadcast on March 25. "Can't Buy Me Love" is re-broadcast on April 8.

Tuesday, March 21, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club, Liverpool - their first night show here. The Swinging Bluegenes top the bill. The Beatles like the Cavern Club, not least for the lack of violence that erupts frequently at other venues. For a fee of 5 pounds per lunchtime session and 15 pounds per night session, The Beatles sharpen the enormous talent that will take them to worldwide fame. The small Cavern Club, which has no tables, is often packed with hundreds of Beatles fans who are packed in like sardines--a fire inspector's nightmare. The Beatles perform on a wooden stage that is only two feet off the ground, and they play only an arm's length from the packed fans (a closeness they will yearn for when they achieve world fame and have to play in stadiums, far-removed from their hysterical fans). John Lennon's manner is copied by the male fans, while the girls are attracted to Paul, some to George, but most of them to the enigmatic Pete Best.

Wednesday, March 21, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club -- a lunchtime show.

Thursday, March 21, 1963: The Beatles travel to BBC Piccadilly Studios, London, to record a BBC radio program, "On the Scene". They perform three songs, "Misery", "Do You Want to Know a Secret", and "Please Please Me". The show is broadcast on March 28. After recording the radio program, The Beatles drive south to Croydon to rejoin the Montez/Roe tour for that evening's performance.

Thursday, March 21, 1963: The Beatles, on the Montez/Roe tour, perform at the ABC Cinema in West Croydon, Surrey.

Saturday, March 21, 1964: "She Loves You" becomes the #1 single in the US (Billboard). Beatles singles have held the #1 spot for 8 straight weeks.

Sunday, March 21, 1965: The film crew leaves Obertauern, Austria, after the completion of locale shooting for the movie "HELP!", but The Beatles remain behind for a day of rest.

Tuesday, March 21, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Attempts are made to record the vocals for "Getting Better". John Lennon had taken LSD and was feeling ill, so George Martin (unaware that John was tripping) took him to the rooftop for some fresh air. When Paul and George realized where John was, they hurriedly got him off of the roof and back into the safety of the studio. The " Getting Better" vocals had to be put off for another day. Sunday, March 22, 1964: The Beatles enjoy a rare Sunday not working. During the first four weeks of filming for "A Hard Day's Night", The Beatles worked Monday through Friday and took the weekends off. It was all over by April, when they resumed working on weekends.

Having obtained the rights to these early Beatles tracks from VeeJay, Capitol feels obliged to issue them again, despite the many repackagings of these songs that VeeJay had marketed. Saturday, March 23, 1963: The Beatles, touring with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform at City Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland.

Monday, March 23, 1964: US release of EP "The Beatles - Souvenir of Their Visit to America" (VeeJay). Includes the previously-released songs "Misery", "A Taste of Honey", "Ask Me Why", and "Anna". VeeJay, having lost its rights to new Beatles material to Capitol, will issue several re-packagings of the album's worth of songs they still have control over. Eventually, though, they lose rights to those songs as well.

Monday, March 23, 1964: Filming resumes for "A Hard Day's Night" at the Scala Theatre in central London. The Beatles exit a car outside and enter under a canvas. Wilfrid Brambell, having escaped from the police, stands outside trying to weasel his way inside. John, Paul, and George then run out to go get Ringo.

Monday, March 23, 1964: The Beatles attend an awards event at the Empire Ballroom, Leicester Square, London to receive two Carl-Alan Awards from Prince Philip for "Best Beat Group" and "Best Single" for the year 1963.

Thursday, March 23, 1967: At a ceremony held at the Playhouse Theatre in London, The Beatles are awarded three Ivor Novello awards for 1966 (Best-selling British single "Yellow Submarine", most-performed song "Michelle", and next-most-performed song "Yesterday"). None of the Beatles attend, although John and Paul provided pre-taped acceptance speeches. The winning songs are played by Joe Loss and his Orchestra, and the lead vocal for "Michelle" is sung by Ross MacManus, whose son will go on to become a professional musician using the name Elvis Costello.

Thursday, March 23, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Completion of "Getting Better". The vocals and bongos are successfully overdubbed.

Monday, March 23, 1970: In Room Four of EMI Studios in London (at the same time that Paul McCartney is making tape copies in Studio 3), Phil Spector begins 're-producing' the "Get Back" tapes into the "Let It Be" album. Saturday, March 24, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Heswall Jazz Club, Barnston Women's Institute, Heswall, Wirral, Cheshire.

Sunday, March 24, 1963: The Beatles, on tour with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform in their hometown of Liverpool, at the Empire Theatre. This is The Beatles' first appearance in Liverpool in more than a month. The group's loyal Cavern fans saw their worst fears being realized--that The Beatles' rocketing popularity would take them away from Liverpool.

Tuesday, March 24, 1964: Filming at the Scala Theatre in London for "A Hard Day's Night" (although the film is still untitled at this point).

Wednesday, March 24, 1965: The Beatles filming in England (at Twickenham Studios) for the movie "HELP!" They work on "interior temple scenes", including the one where they "dive through a hollow sacrificial altar and into water", that scene cutting to the swimming pool scene filmed in the Bahamas on February 23.

Thursday, March 24, 1966: The Beatles attend the world premiere of the movie "Alfie" in London.

Monday, March 24, 1980: US release of Beatles LP "The Beatles Rarities" (Capitol). Songs: "Love Me Do", "I'm Only Sleeping", "Helter Skelter", "Don't Pass Me By", "I Am the Walrus", "Across the Universe", "Sgt. Pepper Inner Groove", "Misery", "There's a Place", "Sie Liebt Dich", "And I Love Her", "Help!", "Penny Lane", "The Inner Light", and "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)". The inside of the gatefold cover has an uncropped, full-size photo used for the notorious "butcher" cover. The "rare" selections were picked because they were either alternate versions, single B-sides, stereo/mono variations, previously unreleased versions, or songs that had relatively limited distribution. Monday, March 25, 1963: On a rare day off from recording and performing, The Beatles spend the day with photographer Dezo Hoffman, who shoots both still photos and some 8mm movie footage of The Beatles at a variety of locations around Liverpool.

Wednesday, March 25, 1964: Filming at the Scala Theatre in London for "A Hard Day's Night" (as yet untitled).

Friday, March 25, 1966: The Beatles pose for photos for the cover of the American LP "Yesterday and Today", taken by photographer Robert Whitaker. The Beatles pose in butcher's smocks, with dismembered dolls and pieces of butchered meat. One of these is used for the famous/infamous "butcher" album cover that is recalled/banned by horrified Capitol Records executives.

Wednesday, March 25, 1970: Phil Spector continues transforming the "Get Back" tapes into the "Let It Be" album. Editing and re-mixing "For You Blue" and "Two of Us". Paul McCartney remains in London, while Ringo Starr relaxes at the country house Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire. Friday, March 27, 1970: Phil Spector continues work on the "Let It Be" album. "Dig It" is cut from 12 mins 25 secs to a mere 49 seconds. Two short bits of Lennon dialogue are mixed in. The first is the line, "That was 'Can You Dig It' by Georgie Wood, now we'd like to do 'Hark the Angels Come'". The second is, "'I Dig a Pygmy' by Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf Aids. Sunday, March 28, 1965: The Beatles tape the final appearance on the ABC Television program "Thank Your Lucky Stars". Recording takes place at Alpha Television Studios, Birmingham. The Beatles lip-sync to their songs "Eight Days a Week", "Yes It Is", and "Ticket to Ride", before a very enthusiastic studio audience. Paul and Ringo are interviewed by Brian Matthew. Broadcast on April 3.

Tuesday, March 28, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). John Lennon records his lead vocal for "Good Morning Good Morning". Paul adds a lead guitar solo and both John and Paul add backing vocals. John had decided that he wanted to end the song with animal sound effects, and asked that they be sequenced in such a way that each successive animal was capable of scaring or eating the preceding one. Suitable animal sound effects are found in the Abbey Road tape library: 'Volume 35: Animals and Bees' and 'Volume 57: Fox-hunt'. Later, additional overdubs are recorded for "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite". Harmonica parts are added by George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Mal Evans, and Neil Aspinall. Paul adds a guitar solo and John adds an organ part.

Friday, March 28, 1986: Acting on a court order, EMI pays The Beatles back royalties in the amount of 2,832,264 pounds. Friday, March 29, 1963: The Beatles, on the Montez/Roe tour, perform at the Odeon Cinema, Loampit Vale, Lewisham, London.

Monday, March 29, 1965: Filming for the movie "Help!" continues at Twickenham Studios. The lab scene with Prof. Foot and Algernon where Ringo is hooked up to a machine. The ring doesn't come off of his finger, but his pants fall down.

Wednesday, March 29, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). "Good Morning Good Morning" is completed with the overdubbing of the animal effects selected the previous night. "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" is brought to near-completion with the overdubbing of the elaborate sound effects created on February 20, along with an organ piece played by George Martin and harmonica parts played by George Harrison and John Lennon. Then recording begins on "With a Little Help From My Friends". Each take begins with the portion where The Beatles sing "Bil-ly Shears". They record 10 takes of the rhythm track, then Ringo overdubs a double-tracked lead vocal.

Monday, March 29, 1982: UK release of Beatles compilation LP "Reel Music" (Parlophone). Contains songs from Beatles movies. After a day of filming for the movie "Help!" at Twickenham Studios, the Beatles try unsuccessfully (for the second time) to record "That Means a Lot" (five additional takes); later they record overdubs for "You're Gonna Lose That Girl", but the overdubs are never used. [Note: The title of the song "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" has been changed to "You're Going to Lose That Girl" on re-releases.]

Thursday, March 30, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). After the photo shoot for the "Sgt. Pepper" album cover, The Beatles resume work on "With a Little Help From My Friends" (originally titled "Bad Finger Boogie"). Guitars, bass, tambourine, and backing vocals are recorded, completing the track. The session begins at 11:00 pm and ends at 7:30 am.

Saturday, March 30, 1968: A promotional film for "Lady Madonna" is broadcast in color on US television, on the program "The Hollywood Palace". The video portion of the film clip was shot while The Beatles were performing the song "Hey Bulldog", but the "Lady Madonna" audio track was paired with the video for the promo release. It won't be until 1999 that the video is broadcast with its original "Hey Bulldog" soundtrack.

Saturday, March 31, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Subscription Rooms, Stroud. The supporting act is the Rebel Rousers. A poster advertised The "Sensational" Beatles as "...Liverpool's top vocal and instrumental group:" and ":stars of Polydor records:". The poster also advised boys not to wear Teddy Boys, and "Ladies" were advised not to wear stiletto heels.

Sunday, March 31, 1963: The Beatles, on the Montez/Roe tour, perform at DeMontfort Hall, Leicester, Leicestershire. This is the final night of the tour.

Tuesday, March 31, 1964: Wax replicas of The Beatles are placed in Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in London. These wax figures would be used three years later on the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album cover.

Tuesday, March 31, 1964: In Australia, The Beatles hold the top six slots on the singles chart: #1 "I Saw Her Standing There"; #2 "Love Me Do"; #3 "Roll Over Beethoven"; #4 "All My Loving"; #5 "She Loves You"; and #6 "I Want to Hold Your Hand".

Tuesday, March 31, 1964: An important day of filming for "A Hard Day's Night"--the filming of the movie's climax (the "live television performance" in front of a studio of screaming fans). One of those fans is Phil Collins. Four songs are used in the movie, The Beatles performing lip-sync with their records: "Tell Me Why", "I Should Have Known Better", "And I Love Her", and "She Loves You". "You Can't Do That" is filmed as well, but it will not be included in the final movie; however, it is shown on the US "Ed Sullivan Show" on May 24. One shot during "Tell Me Why", looking from the stage towards the audience, reveals the film's director Richard Lester.

Tuesday, March 31, 1964: After a day of filming, the Beatles go to the Playhouse Theatre to record a radio segment for the BBC series "Saturday Club", for broadcast on April 4. The Beatles are interviewed, then they perform "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby", "I Call Your Name", "I Got a Woman", "You Can't Do That", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Sure to Fall (In Love With You)", and "Long Tall Sally". John Lennon did a separate interview about his book "In His Own Write", for the program "A Slice of Life".

Wednesday, March 31, 1965: The Beatles continue filming for the movie "Help!", at Twickenham Film Studios (the movie's working title has not yet been changed from "Eight Arms to Hold You").

Friday, March 31, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Glockenspiel and another organ part are overdubbed onto "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite". The "Kite" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" are mixed in mono.

Friday, March 31, 1972: The Beatles Fan Club is officially terminated.
