Saturday, April 1, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West Germany. This is the first of 92 straight nights playing at this club, during which The Beatles will log a staggering 503 hours on stage. They play seven hours per night on weekdays, eight hours on weekends (with a 15-minute break each hour). The grueling schedule will hone their musical skills until, by the time they return to Liverpool, they will be the best band around. It is during this visit that Astrid Kirchherr will cut Stu Sutcliffe's hair into the style destined to become known as the "Beatle haircut". At first, John and the others laugh heartily at Stu's new hair style, but with the exception of Pete Best, The Beatles soon adopt the haircut themselves. Stu Sutcliffe occasionally plays on stage with The Beatles during this second Hamburg trip.

Sunday, April 1, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Casbah Coffee Club, Liverpool.

Monday, April 1, 1963: The Beatles record two radio appearances for later broadcast, both for the BBC program "Side by Side". Each week the Karl Denver Trio would host a guest group on the show, opening each show with a duet version of the song "Side by Side" sung by the Karl Denver Trio and that show's guest act. Since The Beatles recorded two programs on the same day, it was decided to record "Side by Side" only once, using the same version for both programs. For the first radio show, The Beatles record "I Saw Her Standing There", "Do You Want to Know a Secret", "Baby It's You", "Please Please Me", "From Me to You", and "Misery". That show is broadcast on April 22. The second program, which features the songs "From Me to You", "Long Tall Sally", "A Taste of Honey", "Chains", "Thank You Girl", and "Boys", is broadcast on May 13. The recordings are made in Studio One of BBC Piccadilly Studios, London.

Wednesday, April 1, 1964: Filming at the Scala Theatre in London for "A Hard Day's Night".

Thursday, April 1, 1965: The Beatles are busy filming scenes for their second movie, "Eight Arms to Hold You" ("Help!" before it was renamed), at Twickenham Film Studios.

Thursday, April 1, 1965: Release in Sweden of Beatles LP "The Beatles' Greatest Hits" (Parlophone). A special Swedish release.

Saturday, April 1, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio One, EMI Studios, London). Under pressure to complete "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", The Beatles record, in one night, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)". They tape nine takes of the basic rhythm track, overdub vocals, percussion, and audience sounds. The session starts at 7:00 pm and runs until 6:00 am. Take 5 of the song was released on "The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc two, Track 12).

Wednesday, April 1, 1970: Phil Spector gathers a large orchestral/choral group to record the lush orchestration for "The Long and Winding Road" and "Across the Universe" (in Studio One of EMI Studios, London). During the session, Spector manages to anger just about everyone there. Ringo Starr, the only Beatle in attendance at this last recording session for a Beatles record (discounting the latter-day "Anthology" recordings using John Lennon demo tapes), manages to keep things moving, and he plays drums during the recording session.

Monday, April 3, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West Germany.

Wednesday, April 3, 1963: The Beatles, at the Playhouse Theatre in London, record another radio appearance, this time for the BBC show "Easy Beat", their first appearance on this program. They record three songs, "Please Please Me", "Misery", and "From Me to You". In addition to performing those 3 songs, John Lennon and Paul McCartney take part in a program segment called "Going Up?", reviewing new record releases along with two other panel members; they review new singles by Bert Weedon, Cleo Laine, the Vernons Girls, and Tommy Roe. John and Paul are each paid one guinea for their participation.

Friday, April 3, 1964: Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" (still officially untitled) at Twickenham Studios. The Beatles film a bizarre promotional trailer for "AHDN". John and George sit in a baby carriage, with their legs handing over the edge, while nearby Ringo and Paul sit similarly in a second baby carriage. John types away at a portable typewriter sitting in his lap as Paul talks and George mumbles. Twice Ringo answers a ringing telephone, saying, "It's for you, John." Both times Lennon responds, "Don't be soft!" A rather cryptic promotional idea.

Friday, April 3, 1964: The Beatles film an appearance on Tyne Tees Television, answering questions sent in by their fans. The stiff question-and-answer format is not entirely satisfying. Broadcast on April 9.

Monday, April 3, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio One, EMI Studios, London). Completion of "Within You Without You", with George Harrison the only Beatle in the studio. Eight violinists and three cellists come into the studio to record a George Martin arrangement to augment the track. George Harrison records his lead vocal, a sitar part, and some acoustic guitar bits. "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes an instrumental version of "Within You Without You" that essentially omits the vocal track but contains the full instrumentation heard on the "Sgt. Pepper" version (Disc two, Track 11).

Tuesday, April 3, 1984: Liverpool's first statue of The Beatles is unveiled above the doorway of The Beatles Shop on Mathew Street. The creator of the statue is David Hughes, a student of the Liverpool College of Art, the same art school that John Lennon attended.

Tuesday, April 4, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West Germany.

Wednesday, April 4, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club, Liverpool, at lunchtime and again at night.

Thursday, April 4, 1963: The Beatles, at BBC Paris Studio, London, record a third radio appearance for the BBC program "Side by Side". They had recorded two appearances for this show only three days earlier, and they declined the option to record a fourth show on this day. The standard opening duet of "Side by Side" with the host Karl Denver Trio was not re-recorded; the version recorded previously was re-used. For their third program, The Beatles perform "Too Much Monkey Business", "Love Me Do", "Boys", "I'll Be On My Way", and "From Me to You". The show is broadcast on June 24. The recording of "I'll Be On My Way" is the only studio recording that The Beatles made of this song, a Lennon-McCartney composition that was recorded by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, appearing on the flip side of their "Do You Want to Know a Secret" single (also a Lennon-McCartney song). After the recording session, The Beatles travel to Stowe for a late-afternoon performance. The Beatles' recording of "I'll Be On My Way" is included on the 1994 Beatles double-CD "Live at the BBC" (Disc one, Track seven).

Thursday, April 4, 1963: The Beatles perform at Roxburgh Hall, Stowe School, Stowe, Buckinghamshire. This appearance is at a boys' public school.

Saturday, April 4, 1964: "Can't Buy Me Love" becomes the #1 single in the US (Billboard). Beatles singles have held the #1 spot for 10 straight weeks.

Saturday, April 4, 1964: The Beatles hold the top 5 positions on the US singles chart: #1 "Can't Buy Me Love" (Capitol); #2 "Twist and Shout" (Tollie); #3 "She Loves You" (Swan); #4 "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (Capitol); and #5 "Please Please Me" (VeeJay). The Beatles also have the #1 and #2 albums ("Meet the Beatles" and "Introducing the Beatles"). Beatles singles also occupy positions #31, #41, #46, #58, #65, #68, and #79. The following week, another two songs would enter the Top 100, giving The Beatles a total of 14 songs on the singles chart.

Sunday, April 4, 1965: Release in Sweden of Beatles single "Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is" (Parlophone). Seven weeks in the Swedish charts; highest position #1.

Tuesday, April 4, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Final mixing for "Within You Without You". At George Harrison's request, a few seconds of laughter is added to the end of the song, the effects taken from Abbey Road's tape library: 'Volume 6: Applause and Laughter'.

Thursday, April 4, 1968: A promotional film for "Lady Madonna" is broadcast in black and white on UK television, on the BBC1 program "Top of the Pops". The video portion of the film clip was shot while The Beatles were performing the song "Hey Bulldog", but the "Lady Madonna" audio track was paired with the video for the promo release. It won't be until 1999 that the video is broadcast with its original "Hey Bulldog" soundtrack.

Thursday, April 5, 1962: The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club, Liverpool. This night's performance is a special appearance presented by the Beatles' fan club. The Beatles wear their black leather outfits for the first half of the performance, for old time's sake, then change into their new suits for the second half of the show.

Friday, April 5, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Swimming Baths, Leyton, London. Prior to this engagement, The Beatles gave a private performance, for EMI executives, at EMI House in central London during a presentation ceremony celebrating their first silver disc, awarded for the "Please Please Me" single.

Sunday, April 5, 1964: The Beatles continue filming for "A Hard Day's Night". The filming (on a Sunday) is at Marylebone Station, which is closed to the public on Sundays. The opening sequences of The Beatles fleeing from their screaming fans are filmed on this Sunday and the next. By the end of the second Sunday, they had filmed the sequences of The Beatles running across Melcombe Place and into the station, "hiding" while pretending to use public telephones and a photo booth, leaping over obstacles, Paul sitting "in disguise" (wearing a false beard) with his 'grandfather' (actor Wilfrid Brambell), and The Beatles running down platform one and jumping onto an already-moving train. John, George, and Ringo are also filmed in nearby Boston Place, running towards the camera and being chased by frenzied fans. This scene appears at the very opening of the film.

Monday, April 5, 1965: The Beatles continue filming for their second movie, "HELP!" (at this time still titled "Eight Arms to Hold You"), at Twickenham Film Studios. Wednesday, April 6, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). The first session for the album that came to be called "Revolver". The first song to be taped - "Tomorrow Never Knows". It only takes three takes to get the basic song track recorded, but it takes the rest of this day, some of the next, and some additional time on April 22 to complete the complex overdubs. The song is the first to use Artificial Double Tracking, which is the invention of Abbey Road engineer Ken Townsend. The song uses a multitude of tape loops, feeding voices and effects through a revolving Leslie speaker, and guitar distortion (for the "seagull-like" noise on the track) The studio wizardry was created by The Beatles, George Martin, and Geoff Emerick. For perspective on how far The Beatles were advancing musically, recall that "She Loves You" was recorded less than three years earlier). Thursday, April 6, 1967: The first master tape of the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album is created. The song order on side one is different from the final product at this point, the last five songs on that side being initially ordered as follows: "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite", "Fixing a Hole", "Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds", "Getting Better", and "She's Leaving Home". Wednesday, April 6, 1977: The ex-Beatles, working through Apple, lose in their attempt to halt the commercial release of the LP "The Beatles Live! At the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany: 1962". The poor-quality recording had been made during the last Beatles performance in Hamburg, on December 31, 1962. Tuesday, April 7, 1964: Filming at Twickenham Studios for the as-yet-untitled movie "A Hard Day's Night". Completion of the "interior police station" scenes.

Wednesday, April 7, 1965: The Beatles filming at Twickenham Studios, for their movie "HELP!" The "pub cellar" sequence, where Ringo falls through a trap door and confronts a man-eating tiger ("Raja, the famous Bengal man-eater"). The tiger is pacified when The Beatles et al sing Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".

Thursday, April 7, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). Recording "Tomorrow Never Knows" (overdubs) and "Got to Get You Into My Life" (five takes recorded). George Harrison, who is ill, does not perform with the group. Brian Epstein, wanting him to be well when the Beatles leave for Hamburg, would not allow George to perform.

Thursday, April 8, 1965: The Beatles continue filming at Twickenham Film Studios for their movie "HELP!" Ringo shoots a solo segment, in a bathroom, that will be cut from the final film. Then all four Beatles film the "washroom" scene, where a hand-drying machine is rigged for super-suction, ripping off George's shirt and pulling a sink off of the wall.

Friday, April 8, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Tuesday, April 9, 1963: The Beatles are interviewed on the live radio program, the BBC show "Pop Inn". Their about-to-be-released single "From Me to You" is played during the interview. The program is broadcast live from the BBC Paris Studio in London. From there The Beatles travel to Wembley Studios for a live television appearance.

Tuesday, April 9, 1963: At Wembley Studios, Wembley, The Beatles appear in a live television broadcast. This is their second appearance on the Associated-Rediffusion program "Tuesday Rendezvous", which is broadcast in London and by some other ITV stations. The Beatles did lip-sync performances of "From Me to You" and about 50 seconds of "Please Please Me" (during the closing credits). After the broadcast, The Beatles perform live in Kilburn.

Tuesday, April 9, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Ballroom of the Gaumont State Cinema, Kilburn, London. Earlier in the day The Beatles had appeared on a live radio program and a live television program.

They lip-sync to the songs from their latest single, "Ticket to Ride" and "Yes It Is". For the first time, The Beatles wear the fawn-colored jackets that they will wear for their famous Shea Stadium concert. A portion of the "Ticket to Ride" video is included in the May 22 broadcast of the popular British sci-fi series "Doctor Who".

Friday, April 10, 1970: Paul McCartney announces his resignation from The Beatles, one week before the UK release of his solo album "McCartney". The world is shocked. John Lennon, who had kept his much-earlier decision to leave The Beatles quiet for the sake of the others, is furious, feeling (justifiably) betrayed by McCartney's pre-emptive strike, which obviously was aimed at obtaining maximum momentum for McCartney himself. When a reporter calls Lennon to comment upon McCartney's resignation, Lennon says, ":Paul hasn't left. I sacked him." Things get worse, for McCartney issues a printed 'self-interview' with advance promotional copies of the "McCartney" album. Some of the answers to the interview questions come across as petty and self-serving.

Monday, April 10, 1989: UK re-release of Beatles single "Get Back/Don't Let Me Down" (Parlophone). 20th anniversary reissue. Released as a regular single and also as a picture disc.

Tuesday, April 10, 1990: The "Minor Planet Circular" announces a citation approving the naming of four new asteroids discovered by astronomer B. A. Skiff after the four Beatles. The asteroid names are (4147) Lennon, discovered 01/12/83; (4148) McCartney, discovered 07/11/83; (4149) Harrison, discovered 03/09/84; and (4150) Starr, discovered 08/31/84. To name an asteroid, the discoverer suggests a name of 16 characters or less. The suggested name is forwarded to the International Astronomical Union's Small Bodies Names Committee, along with a brief argument as to why that name is appropriate. The argument for naming asteroid 4150 after Ringo Starr went as follows: "He's a Liverpudlian of lively personality and deadpan humor who occasionally sat in as drummer with The Beatles during their early days in Hamburg." If an asteroid has not been named after ten years of its discovery, anyone can propose a name. The asteroid Jerry Garcia got its name from an e-mail campaign started by a fan. Wednesday, April 11, 1962: The Beatles (John, Paul, and Pete--George was sick and didn't arrive until the following day with Brian Epstein) arrive in Hamburg to begin a 7-week residency at the Star-Club. Upon their arrival, they learn the tragic news of Stu Sutcliffe's death the day before. Astrid Kirchherr, Sutcliffe's fiancée, met The Beatles at the airport, and they were all devastated to hear of the unexpected death of their friend.

Thursday, April 11, 1963: The Beatles perform at Co-operative Hall, Middleton, Lancashire.

Saturday, April 11, 1964: "Can't Buy Me Love" is the #1 single in the US for the second week in a row.

Sunday, April 11, 1965: The Beatles perform at the "New Musical Express" 1964-65 Annual Poll Winners' All-Star Concert, at the Empire Pool in Wembley. Before an audience of 10,000, The Beatles perform "I Feel Fine", "She's a Woman", "Baby's In Black", "Ticket to Ride", and "Long Tall Sally". The concert is filmed by ABC Television and broadcast on April 18. Included in the television transmission is footage of "The Beatles" receiving their poll awards from American crooner Tony Bennett.

Sunday, April 11, 1965: The Beatles appear live on the ABC Television program "The Eamonn Andrews Show". They lip-sync to "Ticket to Ride" and "Yes It Is".

Monday, April 11, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Work continues on "Got to Get You Into My Life" (guitar overdubs) and the beginning of recording for George's song "Love You To" (which initially was untitled, later given the working title of "Granny Smith", and only near the release date for "Revolver" is the final title decided upon). Six takes of the basic track for "Love You To" are recorded, the sixth deemed 'best', and sitar and tabla parts are overdubbed. Anil Bhagwat is credited as tabla player, but no credit exists for the sitar part. It is possible that George Harrison himself contributed this part, but no documentation for this exists.

Also inducted this year are the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie", Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Thursday, April 13, 1961: The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West Germany.

Friday, April 13, 1962: The Beatles begin a seven-week stint at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. They were required to perform for four hours one night and for three hours the next, alternating back and forth (performing in shifts of one hour on, one hour off). From April 13 through May 31 they had only one night off (April 20, Good Friday). Over a period of 48 nights they logged 172 hours on stage. For two weeks the Beatles shared the bill with Gene Vincent.

Saturday, April 13, 1963: The Beatles record their first television appearance on the national BBC network, on the TV program "The 625 Show". Recording for the program is in Studio E of Lime Grove Studios, Lime Grove, Shepherd's Bush, London. The Beatles perform three songs: "From Me to You", "Thank You Girl", and "Please Please Me". This recording session prevents The Beatles from making an advertised personal appearance (not performing, just "showing up") at a dance in Lancashire. Since they were in London, The Beatles went to a party hosted by Shadows guitarist Bruce Welch, where they meet Cliff Richard.

Tuesday, April 13, 1965: The Beatles complete filming for the "Relativity Cadenza" scene for their movie "HELP!" (the name "Eight Arms to Hold You" having been dropped).

Tuesday, April 13, 1965: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Having completed a day of filming at Twickenham Film Studios, The Beatles begin the recording of John's song "Help!", the title track for The Beatles' movie-in-progress and the next Beatles album and single. Recorded from beginning to completion in one session (7:00 pm - 11:15 pm), taping 12 takes and numerous overdubs. John Lennon would later refer to "Help!" as one of his first songs dealing with his personal feelings. The "Help!" single would be released on July 23, the album on August 6.

Wednesday, April 13, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). The Beatles complete the song "Love You To", then set about recording their next single. Sunday, April 14, 1963: The Beatles tape an appearance on the ABC television program "Thank Your Lucky Stars", their third appearance on that show. They do a lip-sync performance of "From Me to You". Topping the line-up for the show is an American, Del Shannon. Also appearing are the (not yet successful) Dave Clark Five, the Vernons Girls, and Bert Weedon. The program is broadcast on April 20. After the recording session, The Beatles travel to Richmond-upon-Thames to see, for the first time, another up-and-coming group, The Rolling Stones.

Tuesday, April 14, 1964: Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" continues. The Beatles film a scene that will not be included in the final film: stuck in a traffic jam, The Beatles are cursed at by a passenger in another car. British comedy actor Frank Thornton plays the part of The Beatles' chauffeur. Later, some location shooting is done in Arlington Road.

Wednesday, April 14, 1965: The Beatles filming scenes for the movie "HELP!", on Ailsa Avenue, Twickenham, Middlesex. Included is the scene where The Beatles arrive home and get out of their Rolls Royce, each entering a separate door (Ringo enters no. 5, John no. 7, Paul no. 9, and George no.11). Two women standing nearby debate whether or not to wave at The Beatles. As The Beatles enter their respective doors, the scene switches to a Twickenham film set that makes it appear as if all of the doors lead into one huge communal living area.

Thursday, April 14, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). "Paperback Writer" is completed with numerous overdubs, including Paul's lead vocal and the novel "Frere Jacques" backing vocal sung by John and George. After a 30-minute break, The Beatles start recording John's song "Rain". On this song The Beatles use the full extent of studio technology available at the time: limiters, compressors, jangle boxes, Leslie speakers, ADT, backwards tapes, machines set to run faster or slower than usual, and vari-speed vocals. Five takes are recorded before the rhythm and vocal tracks are finalized. The next session will be spent recording extensive overdubs and doing tape-to-tape reductions of the song.

Monday, April 14, 1969: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). John and Paul, without George and Ringo, record John's song "The Ballad of John and Yoko", which at this point has the subtitle, "(They're Gonna Crucify Me)". This song will be the first Beatles recording not mixed into mono and the first Beatles stereo single released in the UK. (The "Get Back" single was released in stereo in the US). During the recording of this song, the antagonism that has been hounding John and Paul is absent, and they work together well. They lay down the basic track, including John's lead vocal, in 11 takes (John playing acoustic guitar and Paul playing drums). John adds overdubs of lead guitar, second lead guitar, and percussive 'thumps' on the back of an acoustic guitar. Paul adds overdubs of backing vocal, maracas, bass, and piano. John is aware of the potential for backlash from the "Christ" references in the lyrics, so he sends a note to Apple publicist Tony Bramwell that reads, "NO pre-publicity on "Ballad of John and Yoko", especially the 'Christ' bit--so don't play it round too much or you'll frighten people--Get it PRESSED FIRST". Indeed, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" will be banned from many stations as being blasphemous. On some radio stations, the word 'Christ' is edited in backwards to avoid the ban (John is miffed at this unauthorized censorship of his work).

Wednesday, April 14, 1976: Release in Sweden of Beatles single "Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You" (Parlophone). "Love Me Do" had been previously issued as the B-side of the "Please Please Me" single, and "P.S. I Love You" had been previously released as the B-side of the "From Me to You" ssingle.

Tuesday, April 16, 1963: The Beatles appear live on the Granada TV program "Scene at 6:30". They lip-sync to their single "From Me to You". Because The Beatles had been taking advantage of performing on radio and television whenever possible, this live broadcast is at the same time as the broadcast of their taped performance on "The 625 Show" (recorded April 13).

Thursday, April 16, 1964: Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" in the Notting Hill Gate section of London. The Beatles film "chase scenes" with (actors dressed as) policemen. The "police station" is actually St. John's Secondary School at 83 Clarendon Road (only the outside is filmed, although The Beatles did go inside to escape their fans during lulls in the filming). They also film in a nearby cul-de-sac (Heathfield St.). Sequences in Portland Road and Penzance Place are filmed but left out of the final movie. Exactly when the film's title, "A Hard Day's Night", had been selected is uncertain, and whether it was based on a Ringo Starr original idea or a phrase he picked up from John Lennon's story "Sad Michael", will never be known with certainty. However, John and Paul have written the song, and The Beatles will record it at Abbey Road studios this evening (see separate entry). The film's title is officially announced the following day.

Thursday, April 16, 1964: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). They record the title track for their first film, "A Hard Day's Night". The writing of the song was a bit unusual in that John and Paul had the title first, and had to write a song to order. The song is completed in nine takes. "A Hard Day's Night" ended up being the title of the film, the title of a song, and the title of the associated album. "The Beatles Anthology 1" includes Take 1 of "A Hard Day's Night" from this recording session (Disc 2, Track 12).

Saturday, April 16, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). "Rain" is completed after eleven uninterrupted hours of overdubbing tambourine, bass, and more vocals. After tape-to-tape reduction, even more overdubs are added. Four mono mixes are made, with the third being selected as 'best' (and the song wouldn't be mixed into stereo until December 2, 1969).

Wednesday, April 16, 1969: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). Recording "Old Brown Shoe" and "Something". First "Old Brown Shoe" is recorded in four takes, the basic track consisting of Ringo on drums, George on lead guitar and vocal, Paul on piano, and John playing rhythm guitar. Then overdubs, including a new lead vocal and backing vocals, are added. John does not participate in the recording of 13 takes of "Something".

Thursday, April 16, 1981: US release of Beatles (unauthorized) LP's "Dawn of the Silver Beatles" and "Lightning Strikes Twice" (both PAC Records). Songs from the Beatles Decca audition, Jan. 1, 1962. Friday, April 17, 1964: The official announcement came today--the name of The Beatles' first movie is to be "A Hard Day's Night". Meanwhile, The Beatles continue filming for the movie at Les Ambassadeurs in London, shooting the "discotheque" sequence. During the day, The Beatles squeeze in an interview with Ed Sullivan, who had flown over from America to film The Beatles on location. Sullivan doesn't get much of an interview, though, only 1 min 34 secs. But Sullivan unknowingly gets a real treasure. He is given a film clip from the movie to air on his television program--the "You Can't Do That" performance from the "live television performance" scenes shot at the Scala Theatre. When the song is cut from the movie during final editing, Sullivan is left with exclusive footage that will only be shown on his television show. Broadcast on May 24.

Thursday, April 18, 1963: The Beatles perform at London's Royal Albert Hall for the first time. The occasion is a live concert, performed in front of an audience, for a live BBC radio broadcast. The show, called "Swinging Sound '63", is divided into two halves, with The Beatles appearing in both halves, but only the second half is broadcast on the radio. In the first half, The Beatles perform "Please Please Me" and "Misery". In the second half, they play "Twist and Shout" and "From Me to You", taking the producers by surprise--they had rehearsed the song "Thank You Girl" instead of "Twist and Shout", but substituted the song unannounced. At the end of the show, The Beatles join the other artists in performing a grand finale version of "Mack the Knife". The other artists include Del Shannon, the Springfields, Lance Percival, Rolf Harris, the Vernons Girls, Kenny Lynch, Shane Fenton & the Fentones, and George Melly. After the show, Paul McCartney meets, for the first time, actress and 'teen personality' Jane Asher.

Saturday, April 18, 1964: "Can't Buy Me Love" is the #1 single in the US for the third week in a row.

Saturday, April 18, 1964: In the morning, The Beatles work at Twickenham Film Studios, adding and re-recording bits of dialogue for "A Hard Day's Night". In the afternoon, they rehearse for a television special to be called "Around the Beatles", featuring The Beatles and other musical artists.

Friday, April 18, 1969: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studios Three and Two, EMI Studios, London). Completion of "Old Brown Shoe". Then George and John go into Studio Two and record guitar overdubs to "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".

The Beatles tape "Twist and Shout", "Roll Over Beethoven", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Long Tall Sally", "Can't Buy Me Love", a medley of their hits "Love Me Do/Please Please Me/From Me to You/She Loves You/I Want to Hold Your Hand", and an Isley Brothers song, "Shout". "The Beatles Anthology 1" reports that The Beatles also recorded the song "Boys" for the program, but it was not included on the TV special. "Anthology 1" includes the following tracks recorded for this program: "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Long Tall Sally", "Boys", and "Shout" (Disc 2, Tracks 13-16).

Monday, April 19, 1965: US release of Beatles single "Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is" (Capitol). The single's label states that the song is from the upcoming movie "Eight Arms to Hold You" (the original name for the movie "Help!"). 11 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1.

Monday, April 19, 1965: The Beatles are awarded two Grammy Awards for the year 1964: Best Vocal Performance by a Group ("A Hard Day's Night") and Best New Artist. A film clip of actor Peter Sellers presenting the Grammys to The Beatles is filmed on April 28 and is broadcast for US television on May 18, as part of the program "The Best on Record". In the film clip, after receiving the award from Sellers, John Lennon begins speaking nonsense French, and the other Beatles and Sellers join in until the false French evolves into "It's A Long Way to Tipperary".

Tuesday, April 19, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). "Doctor Robert" is completed with vocal overdubs and the production of rough mono mixes.

Thursday, April 20, 1961: The Beatles' manager (now ex-manager) Allan Williams responds to The Beatles' letter informing him that they are not going to pay him a commission for their current engagement in Hamburg. They claim that they had made the arrangements themselves and that therefore they owe him nothing. Williams' letter back to the group threatens legal action, which he might have been able to successfully pursue, but as things turn out he does not do so.

Saturday, April 20, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Ballroom of the Mersey View Pleasure Grounds, Overton Hills, Frodsham, Cheshire.

Tuesday, April 20, 1965: Filming resumes at Twickenham Film Studios for the movie "HELP!" Included in the scenes shot on this day is the one where a "thug" hidden in a mail-box grabs Ringo's hand as he mails a letter and attempts to remove the sacrificial ring from Ringo's finger.

Wednesday, April 20, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). A 12-hour recording session, most of which is devoted to John's song "And Your Bird Can Sing". Two takes and the song is considered completed, and mono mixes of the finished song are made. But the finished track is ultimately rejected and the song will be re-made on April 26. Four rehearsal rhythm tracks for George's song "Taxman" are taped, but the song will be recorded from start on the next day. Take 2 of "And Your Bird Can Sing" was released on "The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc one, Track 19).

Thursday, April 20, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Working on overdubs for "Only a Northern Song". The song is completed. "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes take 3 (recorded Feb. 13), with bass and guitar overdubs from this session, of "Only a Northern Song".

Saturday, April 20, 1968: Apple Music runs ads soliciting tapes from unknown artists, and a flood of submissions follows. Financial grants are given to many applicants, often with little regard to merit. John Lennon hires an astrologer (named Caleb) to consult the 'I Ching Book of Changes' to assist in making business decisions. Overall, Apple's music division will turn out to be relatively successful, sponsoring artists such as Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax, Yoko Ono, Plastic Ono Band, Ravi Shankar, David Peel, Elephant's Memory, and others.

Sunday, April 20, 1969: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). Recording organ and conga overdubs for "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Then 26 takes of "Oh! Sunday, April 21, 1963: The Beatles perform in the afternoon at the New Musical Express "1962-63 Annual Poll Winners' All-Star Concert", a 14-act affair held at Empire Pool, Wembley, Middlesex. This is The Beatles' biggest appearance yet, with an audience of about 10,000. The top group is Cliff Richard & the Shadows. Even though The Beatles had not actually won in the polls, they were picked to appear because of their two recent #1 singles. They perform four songs: "Please Please Me", "From Me to You", "Twist and Shout", and "Long Tall Sally". That evening The Beatles perform again, at the Pigalle Club in London.

Wednesday, April 21, 1965: The Beatles continue filming at Twickenham Film Studios for the movie "HELP!" Shooting of the scene in which The Beatles visit the office of Scotland Yard's Superintendent Gluck.

Thursday, April 21, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). The Beatles record "Taxman", taping 11 takes of the rhythm track and recording overdubs. By the end of the session, the song is pretty much completed, but additional overdubs and editing will be done as late as June 21. "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes the completed take 11 of "Taxman" (Disc one, Track 20).

Friday, April 21, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). They decide to record a short section of gibberish and noise to follow "A Day in the Life", in the run-out groove. They record a bunch of assorted noises and voices, Geoff Emerick chops up the tape and randomly re-assembles it and edits it backwards. At John's suggestion, they also insert a high-pitch 15 kilocycle whistle audible only by dogs. Both of these additions are omitted from the American album. At long last, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is finished. Wednesday, April 22, 1964: Additional filming for "A Hard Day's Night". The Beatles are filmed running down the iron staircase at the rear of the Hammersmith Odeon, the beginning of the "We're out!" segment in which The Beatles run, jump, and have a lark to the song "Can't Buy Me Love". Then they filmed additional "police chase" footage. After that, Ringo films additional scenes for his solo sequence: stopping to photograph milk bottles, being chased by two girl fans, running into a second-hand shop and emerging in disguise, and being watched by a policeman as he strolls along. Paul was filmed making his way to the "TV Rehearsal Room" for his solo sequence, but the footage is later scrapped along with that sequence.

Thursday, April 22, 1965: More filming for the movie "HELP!", at Twickenham Film Studios. Filming of the opening sequence where Clang throws darts at a black-and-white film of The Beatles performing the song "Help!" (This film of The Beatles performing "Help!" was released to commercial television to promote the song when it was released as a single. This version, without Clang and his darts, becomes known as the "dartless" version.) The Beatles also film a long scene with actor Frankie Howerd (as the character Sam Ahab) and actress Wendy Richard (as Lady Macbeth), but this scene is omitted from the finished print of "HELP!"

Friday, April 22, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). A nine-hour session at Abbey Road, recording various overdubs. For "Taxman", overdubbing of the "Mister Wilson, Mister Heath" refrain and of a cowbell part. Monday, April 23, 1962: The Beatles in the studio somewhere in Hamburg, backing Tony Sheridan for producer Bert Kaempfert. The exact date of this session is unknown, although it is known to have been between April 23 and April 27. Two songs were recorded, "Sweet Georgia Brown" and (probably) "Swanee River".

Tuesday, April 23, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Floral Ballroom in Southport.

Thursday, April 23, 1964: A notable day of filming for "A Hard Day's Night". Filming at Thornbury Playing Fields, Isleworth, Middlesex, for the "Can't Buy Me Love" segment. This footage is intermixed with the March 13 footage taken at Gatwick Airport South. The Beatles run about, jumping and skipping and rolling on the ground. John, Paul, and George are also filmed jumping off a ladder, filmed by a cameraman laying on the ground, to give the impression of high-altitude, high-spirited leaping. (Ringo is filmed as if he is about to execute a gargantuan leap, then gives a mini-jump--an unexpectedly clever bit). John Lennon had to leave early to attend a literary luncheon being held in his honor at the Dorchester Hotel. That's why only Paul, George, and Ringo are seen at the very end of the "Can't Buy Me Love" segment, when a groundsman shouts, "I suppose you know this is private property," and George retorts "Sorry we hurt your field, mister."

Wednesday, April 24, 1963: The Beatles appear at the Majestic Ballroom, Finsbury Park, London. About 2,000 people are in attendance for this "Mersey Beat Showcase".

Friday, April 24, 1964: The last day of filming for The Beatles' first movie "A Hard Day's Night", at Edgehill Rd., West Ealing, London. This final bit is for Ringo's solo sequence: he drapes his coat over some puddles for a lady to cross over unmuddied, but the final puddle is not a puddle at all, but a rather large hole in the road with a workman in it. In eight weeks, The Beatles had completed filming for what would become hailed as one of the best "pop" films of all time, in addition to its being a classic comedy. In the afternoon, The Beatles celebrated with an end-of-movie party in a private hall behind The Turks Head pub. The movie would premiere in London on July 6. The BBC obtained the television rights to unused footage from the filming of "A Hard Day's Night" and produced a 28-minute documentary called "Follow the Beatles"; it is broadcast on August 3.

Saturday, April 24, 1965: Location shooting for the movie "HELP!", at Strand-on-the-Green, Chiswick, London. Shooting a scene where The Beatles are walking down a narrow alley and emerge onto the Thames River towpath; they realize that they in danger from "thugs" dressed as bag-pipers and seek shelter inside the City Barge public house (where Ringo falls through a trap door and is trapped with a tiger). John, Paul, and George escape by diving through the pub's glass window front, landing in the street outside.

Thursday, April 24, 1969: A promotional film for "Get Back" is broadcast (in black and white) on UK television, on the program "Tops of the Pops".

Thursday, April 25, 1963: The Beatles perform at the Fairfield Hall Ballroom, Croydon, Surrey. This is yet another "Mersey Beat Showcase", and it had been arranged prior to The Beatles' having their first #1 single and before Gerry & the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas, and The Big Three had become known outside of Liverpool. The promoter, fearing that ticket sales would be light, hired John Leyton to top the bill. When Leyton became too ill to appear, notices were posted outside the ballroom's main entrance. These notices evoked cheering among the waiting fans, none of whom had come to see Leyton.

Saturday, April 25, 1964: "Can't Buy Me Love" is the #1 single in the US for the 4th week in a row.

Saturday, April 25, 1964: The Beatles rehearse for their television special "Around the Beatles".

Tuesday, April 25, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). Just days after the completion of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", The Beatles embark upon their next project--a film to be called "Magical Mystery Tour". Sunday, April 26, 1964: The Beatles perform at the Empire Pool, Wembley, for their first live appearance in Britain in 15 weeks. This is for the "New Musical Express" 1963-64 Poll-Winners All-Star Concert. The Beatles perform "She Loves You", "You Can't Do That", "Twist and Shout", "Long Tall Sally", and "Can't Buy Me Love". They receive their poll-winners awards from actor Roger Moore (who would replace Sean Connery as James Bond). The concert is taped by ABC Television and is broadcast, under the title "Big Beat '64", on May 10 and again on November 8.

Tuesday, April 26, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). They work for over 12 straight hours on "And Your Bird Can Sing". Eleven more takes of the basic rhythm track are recorded, with take ten being selected as 'best' for overdubs. The ending of take six was the best, so it was blended into the master track.

Wednesday, April 26, 1967: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). Overdubs are recorded for the song "Magical Mystery Tour". Bass, maracas, cowbell, tambourines, and backing vocals/shouts are taped.

Saturday, April 26, 1969: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Recording a lead vocal overdub onto "Oh! Darling", followed by 32 takes of the basic track for Ringo's "Octopus's Garden". They worked without a producer. Prior to this session, John had remixed recordings of his and Yoko's heartbeats and the two of them shouting each other's names (the track "John and Yoko" on John and Yoko's "Wedding Album") into stereo. Take 2 of "Octopus's Garden" (with an ending bit from Take 8) was released on "The Beatles Anthology 3" (Disc two, Track 14).

Thursday, April 26, 1984: A statue of The Beatles created by John Doubleday is dedicated by Mike McCartney (Paul's brother), on Mathew Street near the location of the old Cavern Club in Liverpool. Sunday, April 28, 1963: The Beatles take a well-earned vacation. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr all leave for a 12-day holiday in Santa Cruz, Tenerife. John Lennon and Brian Epstein fly to Spain.

Tuesday, April 28, 1964: Taping of The Beatles' television special "Around the Beatles". The Beatles perform lip-sync to the songs they recorded on April 19. They also act, costumed in hilarious outfits, in a humorous spoof of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream": John is the beauteous lady "Thisbe", Paul "Pyramus", George "Moonshine", and Ringo "Lion". John, Paul, and George fake a trumpet fanfare at the beginning, followed by Ringo hoisting a flag and setting off a cannon. Finally, as a group, The Beatles introduce singer P.J. Proby. Broadcast on May 6 and again on June 8. Brian Epstein will sell the film to the US television network ABC, which broadcasts it on November 15, 1964.

Thursday, April 28, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London). Recording of the double string quartet instrumental track for "Eleanor Rigby" (14 takes). Take 15 is created by combining the four tracks of string instruments, to provide open tracks for the overdubbing of Paul's lead vocal and John and George's harmony vocal. Thursday, April 29, 1965: The Beatles continue filming at Twickenham Film Studios for the movie "HELP!" The bathroom scene where the hot-air hand-drier sucks instead of blows, ripping off George's shirt and pulling a sink off the wall, is re-shot, the previous footage having been deemed inadequate. Another scene is shot, showing Ringo restrained on a table with Clang about to remove the sacrificial ring (along with Ringo's finger) with a chain saw. Ahme (Eleanor Bron) comes to his rescue.

Friday, April 29, 1966: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). Recording the vocal overdubs for "Eleanor Rigby". Once those are satisfactorily completed, the song is considered finished, and a mono mix is made. However, a further overdub will be made later, requiring a new mix to also be made. After the work on "Eleanor Rigby" is finished, John adds the lead vocal onto his song "I'm Only Sleeping". "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes two versions of "I'm Only Sleeping"--the first is a fragment from a rehearsal from Apr. 27 and the second is an unused take from this session (Disc one, Tracks 22-23).

Friday, April 30, 1965: Filming for the movie "HELP!" continues at Twickenham Film Studios. The Beatles film the scene at the jeweller's store, where they make an unsuccessful attempt to remove the sacrificial ring from Ringo's finger. John says to the jeweler, "Jeweler, you've failed!" Also filmed is "Attempt Number One" to get the ring from Ringo--Ringo and John are in an elevator that becomes magnetized. Most of the day's filming, though, goes into "Attempt Number Five", which shows The Beatles in the studio, supposedly recording "You're Going To Lose That Girl" while, unknown to them, the floor beneath Ringo's drum kit is being cut through.

Wednesday, April 30, 1969: Promotional films for "Get Back" and "Don't Let Me Down" are broadcast on US television, on the program "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour".

Wednesday, April 30, 1969: The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios, London). A lead guitar overdub for "Let It Be" is recorded. Next, John and Paul work together (without George or Ringo) overdubbing vocals and sound effects onto their unfinished 1967 song "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)". Much of this work will later be edited out. "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes a version of "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" that restores parts that were edited out, adding over a minute to the song's length (Disc two, Track 13).
